The Hawthorn In Spring

The new season is marked

by the return of our starlings.

As they forage in my yard

I read of Mary Magdalene,

the lover of Jesus, humbled

in her sorrow.

The hawthorn tree carries

crystals of light

on the tips of its spikes.

Even this brilliant spring

cannot relieve the darkness

of the human heart.
