Everything Has Changed (AKA Balls XI)

The ball game, however, was delightful. White hot dogs and Genesee draught helped to enhance their enjoyment. And there were even more fireworks.

Donnie and Charlie were delighted that their air conditioning was working. They were not so delighted to awaken early the next morning and have to splash across a flooded floor to get to the bathroom. Time for a room change. Not surprisingly the air conditioning did not work. Donnie decided to fix it himself and had a go at the wall control box. The bad news was it broke away from the wall and was dangling from a few wires. The good news was cold air started gushing from the register.

They were too early for the Brew House so popped across the street to Dunkin Donuts. The planned doughnuts turned into sourdough bacon and egg sandwiches that were surprisingly tasty. Back to the room for a beer, or two, before heading off for a leisurely stroll to the pedestrian bridge over the Genesee River. High Falls was as lovely as ever. They arrived at the Brew House and took a few minutes to check out the store before heading upstairs to the restaurant. A charming waitress – platters of Bavarian pretzels with beer cheese sauce and grainy beer mustard – pitchers of Genesee draught – and so much more. They were somewhat subdued at the ballpark that evening.

The next day they decided to sleep in and forego Dunkin Donuts. Fireworks once again. Otherwise, it was pretty much the same as the day before.

The next morning they had to get up and return to Canada. With a pit stop, of course, at Genesee to load up on cases of beer. As they approached Syracuse, they couldn’t resist one more pit stop – Julie’s Diner for another scrumptious breakfast. This time Donnie and Charlie had the Southern platter: two sunny-side-up eggs, hash browns, sausages, sausage gravy and marbled rye toast. Yummy YUM!

As the miles passed by, they reflected on how different the trip had been from those of years gone by. Everything had certainly changed – and not necessarily for the better. Soon the good memories, however, were outweighing the bad, and they were starting to dream of next year’s baseball excursion. Perhaps a return to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Perhaps a new baseball destination like the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Apparently, they were famous for their spiedie sandwiches. Whatever they were.

As for the mixed-up credit cards and who owed whom what. Well, Donnie would take care of all that.
