Guess I’m having the campsite all to myself for the weekend, he sulked to himself.

After a while the guard dispatched Simon from his care, admonishing him for his behavior as he thrust a large water jug into Simon’s hands. In a hurry to return to his tent, Simon bounded over the chairs and blankets strewn about the campsites. As he neared his area, he spied Julie sitting on the roof of her car, also with a water jug in her possession. When she spotted Simon navigating through the maze of campsites, she hopped down and patiently waited for his return. When he finally reached the site, she reached for Simon’s hand and held it firm.

“Are you mad at me?”

“What gave it away?”

“Well, the fact that you broke my heart right in front of me for starters.”

“Listen, you’re my best friend, you always will be. I don’t want to ruin that between us.”

“But-,”

“I just want to keep the relationship that we have right now. The all-nighters at our houses, procrastinating on homework and eating pizza while watching movies.” She paused, searching for the right words. “When you asked me about going to Watershed, I was so excited because I’ve told you stories about the times I went and I wanted you to experience it with me.”

“So, you’ve never had feelings for me after all?”

“No, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see you anymore.”

That wasn’t the answer Simon was expecting. Looking at Julie, Simon could see she wore a different demeanor than when she was hanging out with Farm Boy.

“Well, I don’t want to stop seeing you either.”

Grinning, she replied, “Well, I am pretty awesome. I got you to come to Watershed after all.”

“I guess you’re right. Isn’t Jason Aldean playing sometime soon?”

Her face lit up once Simon mentioned the country singer’s name. “Oh, my god! I almost forgot. I think he’s playing over at center stage. We need to watch him perform, he’s one of my favorite artists!” Beckoning Simon to follow, she ran in the direction of the giant stage that towered over the mass of bodies and tents.

Maybe she will never like me, Simon thought. But at least I was honest and I told her how I felt. She can’t fault me for that. Also, she still wants to be friends; the other girls wouldn’t’ve wanted anything to do with me. He caught up to Julie before she disappeared into the large, sweaty crowd. Maybe I’ll run into some girl later this weekend; I’d say the odds are in my favor this time.
