Canned Soup, Curlers, Yellow Bowls, Grasshoppers And Me

It was automatic to have milk and two teaspoons of sugar and crushed crackers with our tomato soup.

Today she made apple pie with glazed white icing on the top of the crust.  I did not know how she does it I thought. How to make pies. “Wow!”  Mom’s pies were not like this.  My Aunt Winnie had not yet taken her curlers out of her hair. She must be going somewhere special later to keep her curlers in for hours like that, so we thought.  I could never figure out how she put them in her hair.  Mom grabbed her coffee cup for a final sip and announced, “guys let’s go.”   My Aunt Winnie seemed satisfied at her feast of her day.  We always loved looking forward to her canned soups and ravioli and crackers.

Canned Soup - To the Market

My Aunt Winnie came to us and said “wait.” One quick trip to the market. We opened our palms and was placed several shiny quarters. Quarters were also used for a bag of chips and pop at the bowling league next door.

Definitely the ultimate thrill was walking with Aunt Winnie to the market.  Our candy or gum was always for sale at the entrance of the store. So, we are never new what else was in the store.   The gum wraps had cartoon pictures wrapped around them.  Aunt Winnie was satisfied with our visit as we all loaded up in the old blue car.  It was very tight with all of us in there, but it always worked.  As we travelled up the mountain dirt road towards our house, we always held our breath hoping the car could make it all the way up the hill.  We had never been stuck yet.  I looked for the deer on the hillside that live near us, and I waited for a deer on the road.
