Calvin and Molly Go On A Picnic

“But but what now?” said Molly feeling a little scared. “Where are the blackberries?”

“I don’t know,” said Calvin, “but there’s the barn. Quick, let’s go and see what we can find there first”. So they ran into the barn, past the stall where they slept at night, and over to where all the big green boxes were. The boxes were full of food; food for horses, chickens, dogs, cats – and a box especially for pigs. Molly and Calvin circled around sniffing at each box until they found the one that smelled like supper.

“This one” said Molly. Then she pushed it as hard as she could – but the box wouldn’t budge. Oof. So Calvin took a big breath and to came to help, and with one giant shove, together they pushed the whole box over. Slam! it went, and all the food fell out onto the floor.

“Oh my,” said Calvin, his nose quivering.

Molly and Calvin started to eat. They started, but they didn’t stop. They kept eating and eating and eating and eating, until their stomachs got so big that they could hardly stand up.

“I don’t feel very well,” said Calvin. “I think I have to lie down”. And with that, he fell over with a loud thwump. Soon Molly fell over too. They were so full that they just couldn’t move.

“My tummy hurts,” said Molly with a groan.

“Mine too,” said Calvin.

Molly and Calvin lay moaning and groaning for a long time. Suddenly, the door swung open and there were the two women.

“There you are you naughty pigs. We have been looking all over for you. What on earth have you been doing and why do you look as big as beach balls!”

“We were just looking for blackberries to take on a picnic,” said Calvin in a very tiny voice.

“Hmm,” said the woman. “Let’s get you back to your stall. I hope you are very sorry.”

“Snort,” said Molly quietly.

“Snorfle,” said Calvin with a sad face.

The women helped Molly and Calvin to go back to their stall and lie down on the soft hay. Even though they had been very naughty, the women were kind and still gave them their scratches and cuddles.

“Blackberries” said Molly.

“Picnic” said Calvin as they snuggled up and fell into a deep sleep.

The next day Molly and Calvin felt much better and looked eagerly out the window.

“There they are” said Calvin.

When the women arrived, they had the two big bowls that they brought every day.

“How are you feeling today” they asked.

“Snort ” said Molly looking at the bowls.

“I guess you’d like some breakfast then” they said with a little smile.

Breakfast was going to be good – lettuce and kale from the garden, cucumber, carrots, banana skins and cereal. Then Calvin looked at Molly and Molly looked at Calvin. The two friends couldn’t believe their eyes, because right on the top of each bowl were three ripe, perfect blackberries.

It was going to be a beautiful day.
