A New England Walk

for Sam Hamill

Rags of snow

clutch bare oaks;

ice coats

shear rock cuts.

Late winter –

ducks walk frozen lakes;

brittle reeds

edge the shallows.

Approaching the

Connecticut River

how life passes

these stony farms.
