A Meeting Of Hearts

She thought back to her schooldays. One girl in particular occupied her mind since she had seen Julie’s picture. They had been close friends for a few years, but Rosy had left school to go to work in a law firm. Life became more serious and she and Hildegard lost touch. Then Rosy immigrated to Canada, married and the children arrived. Thoughts of her schooldays had not entered much into her daily life. So why was she thinking more and more of Hildegard?

The information Allan brought startled Rosy.

“Julie’s Mom’s name was Kristen and she comes from Bremen, like you.”

“Bull’s eye,” said Rosy quietly. “There must be a reason for me to find her this way: you meeting her daughter and me thinking of Hilde. Too much of a coincidence.”

She felt a strong urge to contact Hildegard, but was reluctant to pick up the phone. What if Hilde didn’t want to talk to her? So many years had gone by. But Rosy had the feeling that she didn’t have much time. She didn’t know why – yet. Finally she picked up the receiver. Her hand shook as she dialed Hilde’s number. After four rings a woman’s voice answered.

“Hildegard?”

“Yes, who is this?”

“You’ll never guess. It’s Rosy. Remember high school, the two of us singing together, writing funny notes?”

Five seconds of silence, then, “This is impossible, Rosy Braun? I don’t believe it!”

The ice was broken. They talked for half an hour. “You’d better come over,” suggested Hildegard. “I’ve trouble walking, my ticker isn’t too good.”

Rosy bought some flowers on her way over. She felt more elated than she had for ages. When the door opened they just looked at each other, both searching for the faces they remembered. Then they grabbed each other’s hands and laughed.

“You’re looking good, Rosy,” said Hildegard.

I was born in Germany, immigrated to Canada in 1954 and married, three children (girl, boy, girl). Played piano for ballet studios, taught as well, three granddaughters. Have been writing forever: short stories, poems and my book # 6 just got accepted. My acting came as a bit of fun.
