In Black Or In White

World’s black and white,
newspaper likewise.
The stories, the columns,
the editorials –
everything stark –
not a shade in sight.
Politician from hell
meet your counterpart in heaven.
Home town sporting team –
believe me,
the wrong is always with
the other side.
And as for the accused killer,
read up on his real trial here.

And still I turn to the morning journal
for my source of news.
I know that life is never this clear.
The old guy doesn’t have to choose
between pedophile and philanthropist.
The woman may dress like a hooker
but she can also bring her kids up right.
But no point turning the pages
in search of nuance.
These no-nothings
know what they’re talking about.

Maybe tonight,
some homeless guy will use
this newspaper for a blanket.
It may keep his hopelessness warm.
But there’s nothing in there
regarding mitigating circumstances.

Newspaper with a cup of coffee and a croissant.
