Because Christmas (a poem)

Because Christmas

Mommy, why are those lights twinkling

On the houses in the snow?

They are making the dark streets bright

Wherever we want to go.

Why?

Because Christmas!

Mommy, why are there so many shoppers

Carrying packages in the mall?

They are buying special presents

Hoping to please one and all.

Why?

Because Christmas!

Mommy, why are there colourful cards

Delivered by Canada Post?

They are happy greetings

From friends we love the most.

Why?

Because Christmas!

Mommy, why are there pretty floats

With stories of my favourite things

And bands drumming and tootling by

With a clown who some candy flings?

Why?

Because Christmas!

Mommy, why are those little kids sitting

On Santa’s knee in the department store?

What are they whispering to him

And why is he laughing some more?

Why?

Because Christmas!

Mommy, why is there a baby in a manger

In that little wooden shed?

Why are there animals all around

And an angel hovering overhead?

Why?

Because Christmas!
