21 Harry Hogan – Restless Spirit 2

“But then, someone said it was Amos, that he could not rest when it was foggy, and he returned to shine a light for sailors and warn them of the rocks. Feelings of fear changed to acceptance for they knew that Amos would never harm anyone. People began to forget their fears and it became nothing more than a legend about a Restless Spirit, whose true identity was forgotten.

As for the source of the light, I don’t think there is one. I think many who know the legend see a reflection of something and like to THINK they see a light in the fog, oftentimes because they WANT to see it. They think others saw something and don’t want to admit that they saw nothing. It’s kind of like the power of suggestion. But, it’s the story of Amos, first local light keeper and I think it should be told.”

There was a minute of silence. Then Harry said, “I guess so. Imagination can be a powerful thing.” Everyone nodded in agreement.

“Glory, I envy you,” Miss Pinkerton said. “You have a beautiful story as part of your family heritage.”

“Thank you,” Glory replied. “I didn’t realize that, but you’re right.” She looked at Harry and Bertie. “Do you have any questions?”

Harry looked at Bertie, who shook her head, and he said, “When Bertie gets it typed and printed, we’ll contact you then if we have questions.”

“And I will bring you a printed copy of the story,” Bertie said.

“That would be great,” Glory replied.

“I’ll contact the Historic Society and get the ball rolling to have the history of the lighthouse published as a souvenir booklet, including biographies of each lightkeeper,” Miss Pinkerton said. “Will you work on that, Ms Blackett?”

Bertie nodded. “I’d be happy to.”

“And don’t forget, when the history is written, Amos will finally get recognition for being the one behind the decision to build the lighthouse in the first place,” Harry added.

Glory couldn’t help smiling as she saw them out, thanking them again for their interest.

Harry paused in the doorway and looked at Glory. “Have you ever seen the Restless Spirit yourself?”

She shook her head. “There are many things in this world that we don’t understand, Mr. Hogan, and I don’t think we ever will. I think there are some things which we are not meant to understand.” They heard her close the door as they walked down the steps.

“Do you have plans for lunch,” Harry asked as he and Bertie drove away.

“No, why?”

“Silas and Joe were both involved in this story from the start. I thought I might pick up a pizza, get them to join us, and share the information with them over lunch.”

“Sounds good to me,” she said. “After all, you never know when those two are going to come up with something new to keep us busy.”

Harry laughed. “Now, that’s a scary thought.”
